A laser is a beam of light. This beam is focused so that energy is delivered to the target of the laser beam. That energy can be used to remove superficial layers of skin, as is done with laser peels or laser resurfacing procedures, described in another section. A totally different use of lasers allows them to be used to remove tattoos, unwanted hair, brown, pigmented spots, and unwanted small veins in the face and legs. In this use of the laser, the wavelength of the light beam varies, depending on the color of the target, red for the veins, brown for hair and pigmented spots, and various colors for tattoo removal. Varying the wavelength of the light beam prevents the energy delivered from being absorbed by other tissues, and the laser therefore goes right through the skin without causing any damage or wound, and the effect is very precise only on the target color. Unlike laser resurfacing, laser removal of pigment requires little anesthesia, if at all, and there is no healing or significant recovery afterwards. This use of the laser is called photothermalysis, and has allowed effective and safe treatment of problems that were without solution before. Tattoos can now be virtually erased using the laser, and unwanted hair can be permanently removed. Multiple treatments are frequently necessary for the optimal effect of the laser, spaced over time at six-week intervals, but the eventual results can be dramatic. Unwanted brown spots on the hands and face, unwanted spider veins and leg veins, and even scar discolorations can be eliminated with the laser. The procedures are brief, relatively painless, and require no recovery. The results can be almost magical, and are far superior to the alternative treatments used in the past. The various lasers used for the different treatments are all brought into Dr. McGuire's office on a specific day, so that the patients do not have to pay for the laser rental.
