LIP
ENHANCEMENT SURGERY
Beverly
Hills plastic surgeons specializing in lip enhancement surgery.
As dramatic improvements have occurred in the way Dr. McGuire
performs face-lifts, eyelid rejuvenation, and skin resurfacing,
problems in the appearance of the upper and lower lips have
become more significant in some patients. Many solutions for
the wrinkle lines around the lips, and for the lack of lip
prominence and shape have been proposed: injectable fillers,
such as bovine or human collagen, fat, or other materials;
implants made of various substances, both natural and artificial;
and multiple surgical procedures. None of these alternatives
provides a long-term, natural result, however. The injectable
fillers all gradually disappear, more quickly in the lip than
when they are used to fill in wrinkle lines or scar depressions.
The implants may last indefinitely, but are often associated
with firmness, numbness, and stiffness, and may shift or even
erode through the lip skin. They may give a very artificial
appearance, especially with smiling, and usually do not pass
the "kiss test," being felt as a firm ridge. Before Dr. McGuire
developed his "lip tuck" procedure, surgical options often
left a flat appearance, scarring, stiffness, or distortion
of the lip shape.
Based on decades of extensive experience in lip reconstruction,
Dr. McGuire began working on solving the appearance problems
seen in the lips over a dozen years ago. Using principles
of lip reconstruction, the procedure evolved to treat various
appearance concerns depending on the goal of the patient.
The surgery was designed to improve any or all of the problems
seen in the lips, and allows considerable flexibility in how
much change is achieved. Some patients are most concerned
with wrinkle lines, while others want a slight increase in
lip fullness. A more dramatic increase in lip fullness is
also possible, as is a change in the shape of the lip, if
that is desired. The surgery can therefore be customized for
each patient, and it is planned completely on the morning
of surgery with the patient fully awake, before any sedation
or anesthesia. This allows the patient to design the outcome
in partnership with Dr. McGuire.
The surgery is done with the patient sedated, under a local
anesthesia. It is a very meticulous surgery, but Dr. McGuire
has done more of these procedures than virtually anyone else,
and the patient satisfaction is very high. After the surgery,
the lips are swollen and bruised for 7 - 10 days, and there
is some temporary numbness, which resolves as the swelling
disappears.
Dr McGuire has been performing this lip enhancement surgery
for over 14 years, solving a problem for dozens of patients:
for young patients with thin lips, for older people with wrinkle
lines around the lips, for anyone wanting fuller lips without
any "fillers" or implants. The results have stood the test
of time - no one has had to have the surgery repeated, and
the improvement lasts indefinitely!
