Changing the shape of one's nose can make a significant difference in self-image and self-esteem. Many patients come to Dr. McGuire complaining of a prominent hump on the top of the nose, or a lack of definition in the tip area. Others come because their nose is too flat, or lacks shape, and still others come because their nose doesn't look like it's a part of their face, and is too prominent a feature. In the past, nasal surgery, or rhinoplasty, was done with a single "look" in mind, and as a consequence most of the results looked similar, many with an artificial appearance that was immediately evident as a "nose job." Today, that is no longer the approach taken, and each nose is approached differently, with a different goal in mind depending on the patient's ethnic background, facial features, gender, and the goals of that patient. The goal today is to make the nose look better, not artificial, or "done," and the exact nature of the surgery can vary tremendously.

At the time of your consultation with Dr. McGuire, your nose will be evaluated internally and externally, from multiple angles, and a thorough discussion will be held with you regarding your specific areas of concern and goals for the surgery. Everything is completely planned before the operation, and photographs can be used to illustrate some of the possibilities. The surgery is done under a light general anesthesia, and modern light general anesthesia is extremely safe, effective, and without many of the side-effects seen in the past.

In some cases, there are associated breathing problems through the nose, which can be due to a deviated septum and/or enlarged turbinate bones in the back of the nose. Both problems can be effectively treated, with a frequently dramatic increase in nasal airflow. Patients therefore not only look better, but they also breathe much more easily, and find that their stamina is improved.

All ethnic groups may benefit from rhinoplasty, and in most cases all of the scars are inside the nose, and are therefore invisible. Dr. McGuire has a special talent for nasal surgery because of his considerable experience with birth defects involving the lip and nose, and he has developed some innovative approaches to challenging nasal problems. Even those with bad results from previous nasal surgery done elsewhere often come to Dr. McGuire for improvement because of his expertise in this area.
